HONEYGLAZE GHOST
A Honeyglaze Haunting: The South London trio present their latest dreamlike single, ‘Ghost’. Formed of Anouska Sokolow (lead vocals/guitar), Tim Curtis (bass/vocals) and Yohan Amaratunga (drums), the outfit offers a hazy escape into their atmospheric landscape of softly presented vocals and subtle lo-fi textures, a steady developing sound since their debut single ‘Burglar’. ‘Ghost’ is introduced with a repeated three-note guitar melody which plays into a melancholic tone. Sokolow speaks the first verse thoughtfully, as though she is elsewhere in her mind while she communicates in contradictions. The lyrics navigate a reflective uncertainty despite a careful firmness within the vocals. The instrumentation begins to unpack this as it progresses from those few notes into a layered, lingering presence of glistering rhythmic guitar, levelled drum bursts and a more understated bassline. It complements the subject of the chorus: I’m underneath the table / I’m the bedsheets on your back / I am in the front room where the DVDs are stacked / I am here and nowhere, I am always in-between / I’m not being literal, but you know what I mean’. Honeyglaze aren’t dealing with an apparition, but the haunting nature of thoughts and memories that manifest tangibly. It’s a track of dream-pop lushness with a healthy equilibrium of expressive metaphor and immersive instrumentation within a minimal arrangement. It’s a shapely closer to the run of singles taken from the band’s forthcoming sophomore album Real Deal, due September 20th via Fat Possum Records. -Kayla Sandiford
